One of the areas we specialize in is orthopedic surgery, particularly Tibial Plateau Leveling Osteotomy (TPLO) and Tibial Tuberosity Advancement (TTA) for torn ACL in canines. These surgical procedures are often required to stabilize the stifle joint after ruptures of the cranial cruciate ligament, which is similar to the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) in humans.

TPLO Surgery

TPLO surgery is an innovative procedure that changes the dynamics of the dog’s knee so that the cranial cruciate ligament (CCL) is no longer required for stability. The surgery involves changing the angle of the tibial plateau to prevent the femur from sliding down the slope of the tibial plateau. This technique has proven highly successful, allowing dogs to return to their previous activity levels.

TTA and MMP Surgeries

In addition to TPLO, we also perform TTA and Modified Maquet Procedure (MMP) surgeries. TTA is a procedure that adjusts the dynamics of the dog’s knee, allowing for normal function even without the CCL. It involves advancing the tibial tuberosity, which changes the angle between the patellar ligament and the tibial plateau.

In contrast, MMP uses a wedge-shaped implant of titanium OrthoFoam™ to both determine the degree of advancement of the tibial tuberosity and hold the bone in its new place while the bony ingrowth develops for permanent fixation.

Named in honor of Dr. P Maquet, a human orthopedic surgeon from Belgium in the 1960s, MMP is an evolution of TTA and has shown to be a simpler and more cost-effective procedure with excellent outcomes.
