TPLO – Tibial Plateau Leveling Osteotomy

Tibial Plateau Leveling Osteotomy (TPLO) Surgery

A torn cranial cruciate ligament (CCL), often compared to the ACL in humans, is one of the most common orthopedic injuries seen in dogs. When this ligament becomes damaged or ruptures, the knee becomes unstable, leading to pain, limping, inflammation, and difficulty walking. Without treatment, the condition can result in progressive arthritis and reduced quality of life. TPLO surgery is considered one of the most effective surgical options for restoring stability and helping dogs return to normal activity.

At TLC Pet Hospital, we perform Tibial Plateau Leveling Osteotomy (TPLO) surgery to help dogs recover from cruciate ligament injuries. This advanced orthopedic procedure changes the mechanics of the knee so it can function normally without relying on the damaged ligament.

What Is TPLO Surgery?

TPLO, or Tibial Plateau Leveling Osteotomy, is a surgical procedure that stabilizes the knee after a cranial cruciate ligament rupture. Rather than replacing the torn ligament, TPLO changes the angle of the tibial plateau (the top portion of the shin bone) to eliminate the instability caused by the ligament injury. This allows the knee to remain stable during weight-bearing activities and reduces the abnormal movement that causes pain and joint damage.

During the procedure, the tibia is carefully cut, rotated to a new angle, and secured with a specialized bone plate and screws. As the bone heals, the knee becomes stable and functional even without the damaged ligament.
